Cloud Backup and Disaster Recovery

"With data growth estimated at 45% annually, tape backup and long backup windows have become unsustainable, plus recovery from tapes is slow and unreliable. The new solution is not a choice between vendors or software solutions, but a complete change in the concept of how backup and recovery should be engineered and implemented....

Data Backup

The largest single contributor to dissatisfaction with enterprise backup is the massive increase in the data to be protected. Too much data means fewer and poorer backups, which creates risk to the organisation – the risk of downtime, lost productivity, lost data and financial loss.

LAN2LAN recommends nScaled. The nScaled solution provides comprehensive cloud backup for all servers and workloads in the data centre. This all-in-one solution provides Disaster Recovery, Backup and Archiving to organisations with zero tolerance for data loss or downtime.

No backup window, no tapes and dependable, near instant recovery from multiple separate geographic locations. The nScaled solution makes use of snapshot technology with incremental differencing to provide a near continuous backup.

With this comprehensive data protection paradigm, there is no longer a requirement for backup as a point product or isolated process. Backup and the protection of data becomes a by-product of the overall workload protection process and occurs continuously. By delivering more effective and incremental backup, the system also delivers more rapid recovery (shorter RTO) with shorter windows of potential data loss (shorter RPO).

Data Recovery

Data recovery is fast and easy (typically in minutes) from any snapshot recovery point on the nScaled Local Cloud Appliance and can include individual email messages, files, databases or entire volumes. Data is encrypted during transmission over the WAN and is also immediately available for recovery in the Remote Cloud. At least 3 copies of all data exists, in two separate geographic locations.

Snapshot recovery points provide complete historical protection. The nScaled Cloud Console manages policies and recoveries from both locations (Local and Remote). There is no need for investment in offsite facilities as they are included in the service.

The main benefit for any organisation is the ability to failover the entire data centre to the cloud, on-demand during disaster.

In summary, the protection and recovery of data and systems should be considered as two parts to the same business problem:

  1. Protection of data needs to be engineered into data creation processes to ensure data is always and continually protected. There is no time available for backup windows, or planned system downtime in the modern data centre.
  2. Business users expect systems to “just work” including through failover events like power outages. For IT teams to deliver against these increasingly stringent SLAs, a systematic approach to the entire data centre is required.

The twin drivers of virtualisation and multi-tenant cloud computing with utility capacity on demand provide unprecedented opportunity for IT teams to eliminate wasteful over-provisioning and get data protection costs under control.
